SUMMARY:MWIS Mountain Skills and Weather - Weekend in Wales
DESCRIPTION:2-day course in Eryri/Snowdonia combining an introduction to mountaineering and understanding the weather to plan your adventures. \n\n\n\nThis mountain skills course provides a practical introduction to travelling safely and confidently in the mountains\, plus understanding to science behind the weather forecast. \n\n\n\nOver two days we’ll look at how to plan a mountain journey\, what to take and how to pack it\, how to make the best of weather windows and how to make good decisions once we’re on the hill. \n\n\n\nNavigation will be a key thread throughout the weekend\, with plenty of hands‑on practice using the map to interpret more complex terrain. We’ll also explore simple scrambling movement\, how to recognise and manage common mountain hazards\, and what to do if something goes wrong. \n\n\n\nWe’ll study weather charts in the classroom so you can better understand varying weather patterns to help you plan ahead. Out on the hill\, we will observe differences with altitude and look for clues from clouds to identify potentially changing conditions on the move. \n\n\n\nThe aim is to give you the skills and confidence to enjoy mountain days independently\, whether in North Wales or further afield. \n\n\n\nThis course will be lead by a qualified mountaineering instructor and a MWIS meteorologist – it is ideal for anyone interested in exploring the mountains and wanting to build a solid foundation of practical skills. \n\n\n\nThe course runs from 9am til 5pm over both Saturday and Sunday\, with optional social time for early arrivals on Friday evening\, also on the Saturday evening at Plas y Brenin. \n\n\n\nCourse fee covers our teaching and outdoor activity time. Please contact Plas y Brenin directly if you wish to stay on site and if required please arrange food and drink directly with the centre. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook your place here

SUMMARY:Contour & Terrain Masterclass (Contact us for dates)
DESCRIPTION:Unlock the Secrets of the Landscape\n\n\n\nCourse Overview\n\n\n\nHave you ever looked at a map and seen only a jumble of orange lines? Do you find yourself relying on paths\, walls\, and streams to find your way? \n\n\n\nOur Contour Masterclass is designed to shift your focus from “man-made” features to the “natural” shape of the land. By mastering contour interpretation\, you will learn to visualize the 3D landscape directly from your 2D map. This is the “gold standard” of navigation—allowing you to move with total confidence even in thick mist\, darkness\, or featureless terrain. \n\n\n\nWhat You’ll Learn\n\n\n\n\nMicro-Navigation: Learn to identify tiny “land-wrinkles” that others miss to pinpoint your exact location.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Art of Visualisation: Transform contour lines into 3D shapes (spurs\, re-entrants\, convex/concave slopes\, and knolls).\n\n\n\n\n\nContour-Only Navigation: Practice using “stripped-back” maps with no paths or rivers to force your brain to read the ground.\n\n\n\n\n\nAspect of Slope: Use your compass to determine which way a hill faces and match it to the map.\n\n\n\n\n\nMicro-Navigation: Learn to identify tiny “land-wrinkles” that others miss to pinpoint your exact location.\n\n\n\nTransitioning Skills: How to take these advanced techniques back to your standard OS or Harvey maps for effortless navigation.\n\n\n\n\nWho is this for?\n\n\n\nThis course is perfect for: \n\n\n\n\nHill Walkers: Looking to move away from paths and explore wilder\, pathless terrain.\n\n\n\n\n\nLL\, HML & ML Candidates: Trainees preparing for assessment who want to “bulletproof” their navigation.\n\n\n\n\n\nFell Runners: Who need to make split-second decisions based on topography while moving at pace.\n\n\n\n\n\nRefresher Seekers: Experienced navigators who feel their skills have become “rusty.”
